It's coming for PS2, PSP and Wii, so Rockstar doesn't have to spend much time on creating hi-def-friendly textures and a new game engine. You say Wii is the only "next-generation" console to get the game - but really, Wii's hardware power makes the game a relatively easy port from the PS2. More importantly, I don't think it's some deliberate maneuver on Rockstar's part to open up violent gaming on Wii. Resident Evil 4 was on GameCube and there hasn't been a "sweaty" Mortal Kombat since the SNES days. Sure, at first it may sound a bit odd that we'd be seeing a violent franchise on Wii given the console's success with family titles - but when you think about it, it's not like Nintendo® limited publishers in the last generation about what they could put on the platform, either. Peer Scheider, IGN VP: I don't think this is a weird move. If games like Scarface, The Godfather, and Manhunt 2 can see even moderate levels of success on the Wii, it might end up being the first Nintendo® console in a long while that actually is geared towards everyone like Nintendo® claims. Regardless, this surprise is pretty cool, if only because it points to the fact that Nintendo® is working to correct some of the image problems that plagued it in the N64/Gamecube eras. However, once ten year olds are garroting people's heads off with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, the press may not be quite so kind to the new-generation console. The fact that the Wii makes gamers get off of their asses and move really draws the attention of media outlets unrelated to gaming. Right now, the Wii is pretty much the darling of the mainstream press. As much as I relish the thought of simulating dozens of gory-ass executions with my Wiimote, I can't help but shake the feeling that this game may have some very negative implications for the Wii's acceptance outside of gaming circles. However, I expected the game to be a Wii version of Table Tennis or something like that, not a sequel to one of the most disturbingly violent games of all time. I had been expecting a Rockstar game announcement for the Wii for quite awhile now, especially considering how much Nintendo® had been courting the company. Micah Seff, IGN News: I barely even know what to say about this. Considering Rockstar, they should be practically oozing at this opportunity to deliver shock. The possibilities are endless and only limited by the game designers. Forced ingestion of foreign or harmful substances or objects All this and more when you apply the Wii-mote to various devices, machine controls, or the virtual person in question.Hot or heated element to sensitive parts of the body.Death by heavy machinery and tools - amputation of limbs by bandsaw decapitation by var.Death by blunt force trauma - head slammed into masonary surface body crushed by masonary block repeated bludgeoning until target is lifeless.Stephen Ng, IGN FAQs: Dave posted: How many ways can you imagine murdering people with the Wiimote? Bottom line, if it's not good, or somehow fundamentally fashioned for Wii, it probably won't sell. I do hope, though, that the Wii vesion of the game won't merely be a gimmicky port intended to, as some editors have put it, test the waters for Rockstar. Manhunt 2 will certainly help appeal Wii to players normally uninterested in Mario and Zelda. I want third parties to do well on Wii so that we get more and more support for the system. I think Nintendo® and Rockstar are hoping for the latter, which is fine by me. That noted, Wii's future is still unwritten - it could become a family-only console or it could appeal to gamers of all types. GameCube's family image was partly Nintendo®'s fault - you don't create a purple console and then cross your fingers for the Grand Theft Auto franchise. And now, finally, Rockstar is on board the Nintendo® bandwagon with one of the most violent franchises in recent memory - coming to Wii. Matt Casamassina, IGN Wii: I'm really pleased with this news.
